Hi all! Does anyone know if Morels grow in Southeast Alabama? I'm located in Dothan. Also do you think that I'm too late to go out and look for them?

just threw out my last petri dish with inoculated with morel mycelium.didnt have a problem with comtamination the mycelium just shrivels up and looks like a dryed up booger.i started 3 perti dishes with patatoe dextrose yeast agar.incubated in between 75 and 85 degrees. the petri dishes where inoculated within hours of picking the morels,i cut the stem in half and use the cleaner tissue from the inside of the stem to reduce contamination.hit me up if you know what im doing wrong.

Hoping for a good half inch or more of rain on Thurs. I will go out Friday and see what the rain brings us. I don't see another chance of rain for the next week. This may be our last shot at picking this weekend.

hi everyone!!i would like to thank everyone who has emailed me(alot!!)about morel hunting.i had no idea that there are as many people in alabama interested in fungi that there are.So, while i was at work today i got to thinking.what if there was a club in alabama so that we could get together share information, field research, and possibly clone these little bastards.they have resisted everything ive tried to get them to grow,so mabye if we had a network of people in the club one of us may crack the secret, and we could make alot of money!!i have a family screen printing bizz so i can get t shirts made for us,signs or what not.let me know what you think of this idea.id really like to get this started.please email me with ideas, opions, and intrest.

Hey morel sliders. Looking for a morel sleuth that knows where to find these natural pleasures of delight for the pallet.

Jesse, right now look along creeks and in low lying areas, thats were we can get them now. I'm going Fri morn and will be in moist areas only. I will say this, north shelby got 6-7" of rain two weeks ago, and now only about a quarter inch a week the last two. But the bottoms and creek areas still have plenty of moisture.

An encouraging note for bham, al area shroomers. If you go to 2 websites and compare something interesting sticks out for bham relative to Cen GA and Texas where they found morels last week and over the weekend. At morelmushroomhunting.com go to the Morel progression map and note the grays recently found in Cen Ga and Texas, mostly south and southwest of Dallas. Then go to morelhunters.com and on main menu click the NAT SOIL TEMPS. You will note the yellow shade in parts of both TX and GA where morels have been found. Bham is still light green 5 degrees cooler. That is all being solved the next few days with 70's and sunny. Should be a good weekend this Fri/Sat/Sun to get started. For those of us who got skunked last weekend. The morels either weren't out or it was so few and far between because we look to be 4-5 days behind Cen GA

Hey Jessee
I went out most of the day. I was in Steele so looked out there no schrooms of any kind. Came back to Leeds and looked high and low. No luck. Hope your right about next weekend. Good luck schrooming.

Went out for 4.5 hours on Saturday. Didn't find anything in Shelby County, though I'll be we have a few of the smaller greys out from the look of the woods. Probably, similar to reports from Central Ga, few greys, not many, and not that big. By nextweekend we should be in full swing with many mushrooms and larger greys and yellow out. Calling for 70's most of the week with lots of sun. I will definitely go out again next Saturday.

ripper,

nothing really special about them.
i just read that morel hunters usually come across them, so i was hoping that means im hunting in the right habitats.

i spent atleast 3 hours hiking around yesterday and did not find any morels.

surely someone who knows what they are doing should be finding them soon.

Going out Saturday morning to look just south of Bham. The redbuds are blooming and the oak leaves are just starting to show about an inch. Our soil temps have been max to min 53-58 the last couple days. I will hunt at least 4 hours even if I get shut out. Can stay all day if Im finding them. Will get a post in tommorrow nite to report how things went.

also i have been reading that morel hunters usually come across these mushrooms in early spring, so does that mean im atleast on the right track for morel habitats?

Visiting due to a death in my immediate family. Has anyone found any schrooms yet in the Bham area or more north? Probably too early.
