Okay.... the morels are popping in Texas.... we are planning on having a lot of postings on the Drummond Island message board this year... so I thought I'd remind everyone of what morels look like and what kind of haul you can make if you find the right spot...

Texas Morels - March 20, 2010 - Who ever said that morels don't grow in texas needs to look at some of my pictures. I have never seen these type of growing conditions rocky soil hills side and flat ground under juniper schrubs. I even found a couple growing right out of some holes in the rocks. The whole time I was out picking I was thinking to myself that I must have found somone's secret spot but I don't think anyone around here even knows what they are in some cases they where growing right along a trail and people where walking right by them.

The snow is out of the woods! As the days get longer and the temps a bit warmer it won't be long before the morels start to *pop*!

Here are some good morel hunting tips from the U.P. North Life blog by Candis Collick:

* where there is one, there are many
* look outward, not downward
* always leave at least one mushroom in the woods (insures they'll be more next year)
* where you find greys, yellows will follow
* whites are the last of the season
* check under or around the May Apples
* dying or dead Elm trees, Sycamore and Ash trees are your best bets for big hauls
* always pinch or cut, do not pull them out of the ground
* the best place to hunt morels is on someone else's property
* pray to the Mushroom Gods before each hunt
