I am originally from Pennsylvania and have not found anyplace to even start looking for morel schrooms. My maan brother calls me every week stating that he is so full from eating morels he is almost sick. I wish I could just find enough to make a good cooking. I loved them when I lived in Pa. Tell me where to look, PLEASE!

Dane -
I think they already popped in North Georgia. I have a tiny spot up there and it produced about 2 weeks ago...they came up small, quick, and dry.
I don't know how far north you go - but I was in the Lumpkin county area.

Spent yesterday hunting in the rain in Greenville, GA and West Point WMA near Franklin, GA and didn't find a single morel. As the name implies, I'm a transplant from Nebraska and I'm still working on finding some shrooms down here in GA. I plan on searching north of Atlanta in Rabun county this week. Does anybody know when the mushrooms start appearing in north GA?

Yesterday wasn't a total miss though, I did locate a bald eagle's nest and could see her young perched on the side of the nest.

I found two peckerheads(or whatever they are called down here)today after the rain in Walker Co. We call them peckerheads back home in Indiana. They are the tall ones that consist of a small cap and a long stem. One was dry, but the other was very fresh. They were in an old clearcut that is now covered with a bunch of young poplar trees.

Found a dozen smallish morels in McDonough, GA (just south of Atlanta) today while visiting family for the weekend. Bottom lands near large hardwood trees. This area flooded over the winter during heavy rains. Some grays and some yellows, a dozen total. We need rain, even though soil moisture is good. Just getting started...

Well, we're back and my wife was able to find six small (2-3") yellows in one spot in the Oconee Forest. It seems the weather just didn't break right this year. Next year we may check out the Columbus/LaGrange GA area.

Are there Morel Mushrooms around Columbus Ga? The answer is yes, however this year I have yet to see any and I have been looking since about mid March. Couple of years ago I was able to find a nice patch, was able to harvest about 5-6 onion bags worth.

Have found close to 300 morchella deliciosa over the past week. These are fairly small morels and probably only equal a couple pounds total. Due to the hot/dry weather the last few days and forecast for more of the same, I think our season is coming to a close in the next couple days.

Our local paper here in Augusta will be running an article on morels Easter Sunday in the sports section. If you're from around here, check it out, you may see a picture of me.
