| Dry Bones| | Chadron, NE | | December 23, 2009 dw - we too found fresh oyster mushrooms over the Thanksgiving holiday. All were on cottonwood along the Niobrara just west of Spencer. This is by far the latest in the year oyster's that we've ever found. Merry Christmas to all Nebraska 'shroomers! |
| dw| | beatrice, ne | | November 29, 2009 Just picked a mess of oyster mushrooms and tried them for the first time. they are tasty. I've seen them before and in fact had picked a mess of them a couple of years ago but was so afraid they weren't edible. I had them identified this time by someone who eats them regualarly. I'm hooked on them. |

| Fred| | Lincoln, NE | | hybred978(at)yahoo.com September 21, 2009 Am looking for infomation on puffball mushrooms. Most interested in knowing the approximate season for them in SE Nebraska.
Thanks. |
| Butchbob| | Spearfish, SD | | August 18, 2009 Thanks Dry Bones!! Your recipe yielded a mighty tasty watercress soup.
A few puffballs are popping here in the northern hills, but no other 'shrooms that we like to eat. |
| Dry Bones| | Chadron, NE | | July 31, 2009 Hey, Butchbob, I do follow your posts on the SoDak board...keep up the good info/sharing posts! Seems like the Black Hills and the far western Great Plains remain an undiscovered part of the fungi world!!
Try this for Watercress Soup, it should freeze ok for a year+.
1.5 cup chicken/pheasant/turkey broth 0.5+/- cup chopped onion +/- garlic minced 1.5+/- cups shredded watercress - we use 1.5-2X recipe 0.5 cups shredded lettuce - red is best 0.5 cup cooked/diced ham or bacon or hard smoked fowl simmer all for 25 minutes +/- add 1/2+ tsp sage 1/2 tsp celerey salt 1/4+ tsp white pepper 2+ TBSP real butter 2 TBSP flour (we use rice flour) Dash nutmeg + Dash Mace Simmer all, then add 1-2 cups whole milk, warm and serve or freeze. Cooked and shredded snake or pork or other white meats are also good! All mushrooms are good additions to this!!!

| Butchbob| | Spearfish, SD | | July 21, 2009 Hey, Dry Bones.......do you have a recipe you would share for cream of watercress soup? We have good access to consistent spring/summer supplies of watercress and would like to make up some watercress soup base to freeze for winter consumption. Any info is appreciated!!
We did find a couple dozen black morels in Glacier Nat'l Park over the weekend, so they are still out there! |

| WanderWest| | Hot Springs, SD | | June 22, 2009 For those of you planning a picking trip to the Black Hills the Aspen oyster mushrooms are quickly starting to wind down and we are drying out in the southern hills. A few puffballs still out there, but they too are getting past the fry pan stage. |
| Dry Bones| | Chadron, NE | | June 12, 2009 J - We are thrifty and like to make our excursions carry their weight via providing food and fun. You may want to get a good regional book. We use "Mushrooms and Other Fungi of the Black Hills and Surrounding Area" by Audrey Gabel and Elaine Ebbert. This is a good starter for the Black Hills as it is produced by staff at that 'other' teachers college in Spearfish plus has state, federal and private fuding. It was published by Black Hills State University in 2004 and we got our copy at a bookstore in Rapid City.
Edible fungus we pick include porcini (bolete), morel, oyster, puffball, honey and the really rare blewits. Other forest and praire edibles we seek include fish and game in season, asparagus, watercress, cattail root, wild onion, all berries and hazelnuts. A field guide on upper great plains or Rocky Mountain plants is most likely available at your library and will assist you in your efforts. Have a great and fun summer! |
| hens??????| | , IA | | funky_rhino_25m(at)yahoo.com June 09, 2009 When is the best time ?? Where are the best places to look for the Hen/chicken of the woods???????????
|
| J| | , NE | | June 08, 2009 Dry Bones, That is impressive! Sounds like you had a great time.
Question: What other types of edible mushrooms can be found in the area? You talked about the Black Hills Porcini (King Bolete). Are they just in the black hills? When do I find them and how?
What about plants? It sounds like you know what you are doing up there.
Thanks for your help.

| Dry Bones| | Chadron, NE | | June 05, 2009 Probably found the last of this years yellows on Indian Creek south of Ardmore, SoDak. A few giant cottonwoods blew down and yielded 17 nice yellows hiding on the NE faces. They most likely were up for almost a week or better, but we cut them anyway. As a bonus we got our first rattler (7 plus a button) of the year and he will greatly compliment our deep fat fried 'shrooms!
Also got nearly 5 pounds of asparagus spears, so a great excursion to far NW Nebraska! The pronghorn fawns are now up and running, what a sight for week old critter to easily outrun almost any four legged critter!! |
| Nice | | | | June 04, 2009 Awww don't get angry with me because you're a lousy Morel hunter.
WOOOOOOOOO you just got pwned |
| marcosne| | lincoln, ne | | May 31, 2009 I wish I could hook up to a morel iv. |

I agree with Not So Nice.....
Nice, you DO need to get a life, along with grammer and typing classes. The way you are using it, it should be YOUR, not YOU'RE (as in YOU ARE!!). Because what you wrote is "You're probably just some dumb ass kid that is still sucking on YOU ARE mommas tit. If you want to talk about butt ugly go stand in front of YOU ARE mirror and look YOU ARE sad self in the eyes.
And I thought this was a morel mushroom board, not a forum for those of you that have no life to just bag on other people, and then not even be able to use proper grammer or spelling while doing your whining and bagging!
And look, I'm just a chick, but at least I'm not a pussy and afraid to put my email address up like the rest of you pussies! |
| Not So Nice| | | | May 29, 2009 Hey Nice,
Why don't you take a few grammar classes and maybe a typing class before posting. Also, an anger management class might be something to consider. I think maybe the worms have gotten into your brain. |
| Nice | | | | May 29, 2009 Get a life before you decide to speak ... You're probably just some dumb ass kid that is still sucking on you're mommas tit. If you want to talk about butt ugly go stand in front of you're mirror and look you're sad self in the eyes .
Forum trolls are the greatest i wish you would all get hit by a bus . Just hard enough that you dont die instantly but you suffer for a few hours crushed then die . Then we can all buy one of those walking sticks and take turns beating you're dead body with it for fun !!!!!!! |
| | | | | May 29, 2009 SUCH QUALITY NOT SUCK ***** |
| Nice| | | | May 29, 2009 I dont see anything wrong with those you must be ignorant because your not mechanically inclined enough to produce suck quality dont bag on others you douche bags. |
| Joe| | Kearney, NE | | May 28, 2009 He actually took those pictures 10 years ago. He still has his inital inventory. He is trying to get out of the business of selling butt ugly stupid walking sticks. |
| Chuck| | Lincoln, NE | | May 27, 2009 Those sticks look more like a butt plug than a walking stick. Stupid, stupid, stupid. |
