| Geogymn| | Valley of the Mohawk, NY | | August 20, 2009 Stevo, I will try to relay a message I wrote when I first started this quest. It is addressed to a fellow newbie as follows:
>Jerry, After work Friday, checked out a spot in Deerfield looking for >morels to no avail. Sat. morn went flying down the arterial towards >Bridgewater only to spot Rich's truck atop the Sauquoit valley wall parked >along side the Trojan Horse, took the next exit and headed up to see if I >could intercept him, upon arriving decided to head into the lower woods as >not to disrupt his hunt. I brung my gun but was really on a quest for the >elusive morchella esculenta . I stopped in a strategic spot and hooted out >a couple of sexy turkette calls, waited for about 30 seconds and decided >that the woods were devoid of turkeys, got down to some serious schroom >hunting. I searched far and long and was rewarded by finding a large yellow >( 8 inches plus) and two smaller specimens ( I decided that the morel >being phallic in shape is best qualified by size). I deserted the Green and >headed to Bridgewater, a spot that by any stretch is a perfect place for >morels, old apple orchard, over grown with ash trees. Again I looked hard >and I looked long, alas not a one to be found. My constitution was >beginning to crumble. Next I headed to Rich's Ranch, last chance for a myco >dance. Two minutes in the woods and I find a Half free morel, my first, my >spirits lift, Five more minutes I find a yellow under an ash tree, my pace >is quickening. Up above me there is a grove of old ash, I'm feeling >confident. I climb and I search, climb some more, search some more, for a >couple of hours, can't score another morel. SCREW THIS, this ain't fun no >more. Though I'm turned around I start heading back towards the ranch. I >detour slighty to go through an ash grove, at the base of an ash I spot >three yellows standing proud and true, I've never seen three at one time, >but wait there's more by the next tree and several more by the one next to >it, Finally I hit it, a morel patch, and understand the rush felt by >veteran morel hunters. Found fifty in this one spot, fifty, what a great >haul. Rich and I returned today to find a dozen more plus a nice big >Chicken of the Woods (Sulphur Shelf, Laetiporus sulphureus), a surprise >find this early in the season. Brung our harvest over to Scott's and >Lisa's who cooked them as fine as any gourmet can. What a great hobby.z > The Moral of the story: When lacking finess, persistance will bulldoze >you to your goal. >

| Geogymn| | Valley of the Mohawk, NY | | August 20, 2009 I will give you advice (for what it is worth)regardless if I find the milkies or not. It was rough my first few years, they are really sneaky in this area. Enjoy the hunt! |
| Stevo| | Catskills, NY | | August 19, 2009 No problem Geo, hope you find some. If you do, maybe you can repay me with some morel advice. I tried hunting the Catskills exclusively for morels this year and came up with a big goose egg. I don't want to be a sellout and go back to Ohio where I grew up, but this spring was frustrating. I have access to some nice orchards, but unfortunately they all get sprayed with pesticide. |
| Geogymn| | Valley of the Mohawk, NY | | August 18, 2009 Stevo, thanks for the info, I will keep an eye out. Much obliged, Geo |
| Stevo| | Catskills, NY | | August 17, 2009 Not sure, but try Lactarius corrugis. Very simliar to the tawny milkcap but the cap seems to always have concentric wrinkles, even when young. They have firm flesh and are just as tasty, if not better than the golden chants in my opinion. I have found caps as big as 4 inches in diameter when mature. They ooze copious amounts of white milk from damaged areas when fresh. I find them under birch and beech, often in the same areas as the large sweettooth mushrooms (Hydnum repandum). The two species are similar in color and look a little alike from a distance. I'll try and post some recent photos. |
| Geogymn| | Valley of the Mohawk, NY | | August 16, 2009 Stevo, Not sure of the "wrinkled milkcap", you wouldn't have the scientific name per chance? I am interested, never consumed any from the genus of Lactarius, and your report has whet my appetite. |
| Stevo| | Catskills, NY | | August 14, 2009 Been swimming in yellowfoot chants the last couple of weeks. Down here the golden chants are just starting to come on strong. It looks like the next couple of weeks will be good. I haven't seen much in the way of King Boletes yet, but I have found quite a few sweettooth and wrinkled milkcaps under the hardwoods. Don't know if you've ever found/picked any wrinkled milkcaps, but they're delicious!!! |
| Geogymn| | Valley of the Mohawk, NY | | August 13, 2009 Yeah I'm here. Was a great year for Chants, best I've seen. Kinda weird that it seem to be perfect conditions for fungi all summer but found few other than the aforementioned Chants. Others are starting to come on now including Sulfur Shelf, Sweet Tooth, Laccaria, and Boletes. Enjoy the hunt. |
| Stevo| | Catskills, NY | | August 11, 2009 Hey geo, you on here? I'll talk chanterelles with you. |

| Geogymn| | Valley of the Mohawk, NY | | June 25, 2009 Any NY Chanterelle hunters out there? |
| Kiga| | Windsor County , VT | | June 02, 2009 Vermont Find - No Vermont board,Sorry NY was the closest board. June 1, yesterday my husband found 22 big...no huge yellows. From the mid west and I have never seen such big mushrooms. Will be posting pics. Some were what I call a grey (lt. grey color) not like the ones we find in Indiana, bigger and lighter in color. And the yellows were huge and denser in feel. Had some for dinner...Oh my !!! Life is good in Vermont. Found under stressed Elms and some around a old apple tree stump in my back yard :-) I am not familiar with blondies..are they kinda of a grey/yellow mix ? They were very fresh. |
| Geogymn| | Valley of the Mohawk, NY | | May 31, 2009 ROYAL FLUSH!!!! Went out yesterday to see if I could bear witness to the legendary second flush and got paid back in spades. 426 yellows, almost doubling my single day record. Several bigfoots but mostly small water soaked specimens... still counts. Mostly under Ash, North exposure, higher and dryer ground. Been raining here a lot. Fine breakfast this AM. Enjoy the hunt, Geo. |
| Brad| | Ballston Lake, NY | | helical_rodeo(at)yahoo.com May 29, 2009 Will,
I left my email on this message. I picked the mushrooms last weekend and put them in the refrigerator in an open plastic bag with a wet paper towel. I'm sure they're not the best right now because they've lost some of their aroma, but atleast they're still there and they haven't deteriorated. If you email me then I can send you pics.
Thanks for the help, Brad |

| Greg S.| | Syracuse, NY | | May 22, 2009 Found about 40 yellows near Elmwood Park in Syracuse. There are many elmwoods around and the spot I was looking is a relatively high elevation; I was almost level with the many reservoirs in the area. They were in the woods and it is on the side of a hill. Found about the same number last year in the same spot on the same date (May 22). A couple more days and they would have been past their prime I got them just in time. Will probably look in some more spots tomorrow - don't give up they are out there. |
