Eighty % of the Chants I find are under Beech trees with remainder under Hemlock. Generally they are on high and dry ground with good canopy cover. Enjoy the hunt, geo.

So excited to find this board. Originally from MI where we never missed scouting and finding-Recall the scouting took forever and then when you finally found one they were everywhere! Elusive little devils. Looking forward to finding in NY next year!

Hello All,
Anyone here ever try hunting in Allegheny(sp.)national forest?
If so email me as I've always wanted to try there but it's a long
drive and gas is expensive. Also it's seems as though it's rather
rocky there,from pictures I've seen.

Hi Erin; I was curious how you were making out. We have been out of the woods for almost a week now, but we got 10-12 lbs out of this one spot. Not too shabby for our first spot & first year hunting. We scouted many other areas & found one here & there, but no flushes. I even hunted areas others described as being loaded with no luck. So I am hopeful we will find many locations in the years to come. Other local foragers said they had been finding lots of them in several locations. One local pro / chef forager is still hunting in the Lake George area on Monday - we are awaiting the report. Hope the forager you had checking your spots hooked you up & that your back issues work get worked out.

-Ed

Dawn, I know it is frustrating. I hunted for a long time before I scored. The first year I didn't find any. The year after, 53, and most of them was from one spot. Last year 1005. So they are out there but they ain't as abundant as out West. I don't know Buffalo so I can't be specific. All I can tell you is don't hunt the scroom, hunt the tree.I concentrate on live Ash, Dead Elm and half dead Apple. I go from tree to tree, I walk a lot. The hardest to find is the SDM (slow down morel). Once you find one spot you can bank it for next year and each succeeding year should yield bigger dividends. Again, I know it is frustrating, but that is what makes them taste so good. Enjoy the hunt, good luck, Geo.

My husband is from IL where he didn't have to hunt for morels - they were just everywhere (or so it seemed.) He moved to WNY, 11 years ago to marry me & hasn't been able to find any here. I'm hoping to help him find some spots to try - I know it's getting late in the season, but if I could give him some hope that they really are around here it would mean so much to me (and him, especially since his birthday is next week.) Thanks everyone & Happy Morel Hunting!!!!

I have been looking for morels in Oswego County for a while and have never found any until yesterday. I found one that was too old along the dirt road by Sandy Island State park. I had been told by someone that they don't grow in Oswego County so I must have found the only one. If anyone has too many morels (if there is such a thing) and would like to sell a few, please let me know.

Found 9 yellows under Apple. All too old. Hope the proverbial second flush appears as the last two weeks are upon us.

After scouring my secret spot all month I finally came up with three nice yellow morels. This is the same spot where I found about 3 lbs. last year at the very end of May. I'm wondering if this is just an area that produces late in the season and I haven't seen the full growth take place here yet. I'll be continuing to monitor as I only found a few decayed bodies where there should be many.

I went back to course today to pick what I left from Thursday. On my way there, I grabbed 5 off the side of the tracks and then 10 from the spot I left Thursday. As I was walking back toward the tracks, I noticed a few large dead elms......10 pounds later! I left fifty or more in the ground because of the decay. I posted the link to a picture in the email.

Walked out the door, down the road. No more than 10 minutes, on the north side of the creek and on the south side of the road found 16, ranging from 3-6in. and only one slug.

Just found a small handful of yellows while walking the dog this evening. A couple were dry, so at least a day or two old. Heading back out tomorrow -- they're out there!

So I'm golfing today and I find "the tree". In four years, I haven't found a morel in New York state, which left me longing for my spots in central Illinois, where I didn't 'hunt", I picked them growing up. I walk two feet off the course and find 32 morel mushrooms. Oh how I felt like a kid again. With this rain, I feel really good about my chances this weekend! If you hunt morels, and live in Western New York, let me know.

i've been out looking in the training areas on ft drum with no luck. i'm from iowa and back home we find them on the south facing side of a hill around dead elms. i'm thinking maybe it hasn't been warm enough here yet this year.

Found ~30 yellows of good size in a forest with lots of ash trees and some elm. The particular spot is on the side of a hill and has moist soil. I found them in the same place last year and the year before that, although I usually go looking right around May 20th. I am hoping for a second flush, as this is my only morel spot.

Mark, Good job on the large score. Walked a lot yesterday, also got soaked, also fell numerous times. Found 44 and most were beauts. My best spots haven't come alive as of yet.

wow a good day got ouy of work and went to a different spot looking to see just how prevalent they are in this area and found two monster yellows and a half dozen of the grays in about an hour.Never knew they even existed till my girlfriend introduced me to them and now im obsessed in finding new locations that they are living in and low and behold they are here.I will say that almost all seem to be near pine trees, still a little odd based on the research that ive done but they is where they is Life is truly good
