| fungushunter| | Fargo, ND | | June 17, 2009 What the heck did I push? Anyways, I agree with you Kim. I was hoping for warmer weather when they first came up. Might have had more large ones in the bag. Had to pick many medium size ones because they started to dry out or were getting buggy. Still had a great pick, can't complain.
You should really get a good field guide like the one I suggested below. There are so many different flavors of mushrooms out there. I wont make it out too many times until the end of July, but would not mind going on a foray some time. I'm convinced there are chanterelles in buffalo river park. Keep in touch. |

| KIM| | Moorhead, MN | | June 14, 2009 Fungushunter,
In general had the best year in 3 years. Was hop[ing after the last rains and more heat would have maybe brought more shrooms. Checked twice over the last week with no measurable luck. Have to admit it is over. Still getting lots of asparagus every 2 days. I have not done any other mushrooms, but would be open to a lesson on others. Seems like the vegetation gets pretty thick in the woods. Let me know if you need a student to teach to find other mushrooms......KIM |
| fungushunter| | Fargo, ND | | June 12, 2009 Hey Toad Man,
Good to see someone new on this board. Sorry, I don't have much info on ND, but if your looking for a good guide to edible mushrooms I suggest "Edible Wild Mushrooms of North America, by David W. Fischer and Alen E. Bessette." It covers most of the easily identifiable edible mushrooms in America. North Dakota Isn't exactly known for its morel crop but as you can see they are definitely here.
This board goes pretty dead after June but if you check in from time to time I will post what I am finding around here. After all the mushroom season has just begun!
Kim,
How was your season over all. Sounds like you did good. You look for any other edibles other than morels? |
| Toad Boy| | Minot, ND | | toddmyoung01(at)gmail.com June 09, 2009 Hello all - Very, VERY, recently moved to ND, is there a guide for morels, or mushrooming in general, to this great state? I'm starting with a blank slate here so any and all info is much appreciated. Thank you!
I can reciprocate with WA State patches and territories I know well. |
| Matt| | Bismarck, ND | | June 02, 2009 My wife and I went out north of Bismarck last night and found about 20 morels. The morels were starting to dry, but there were quite a few that were really nice. I wish that I could find a spot that had more but as I keep track of my spots I should be able to find more. Congrats to all of you who have found bushels full, it must be nice. |
| Chris| | Bismarck, ND | | May 30, 2009 Went south of Bismarck for 2 hours and came back with 13 lbs. Left just as many as I picked. Starting to find a lot of dried up ones. Get them before they are gone!! Plenty of them out there. |
| emokeller| | bismarck, nd | | May 29, 2009 are they ever plentiful here. the darker shaded areas and with some of the rains, i don`t know if i will get to all of them before they turn. my wife went out by herself this afternoon, and had a blast. she is a slow picker, trimming brush as she goes through. where i just bust my way through. anyway, she came home aftwer a few hours with 150 tp 175 nice fresh morels. we are going out early tomorrow and hittin it hard. we have plenty mess bags, so that won`t be a problem. let you know how it goes. |
| KIM| | Moorhead, MN | | May 28, 2009 Went for a 2 1/2 hour hunt tonight. Good night as we came back with 9 pounds added to the 8 pounds from last Thursday. Could have been more but it was getting dark and had to quit. |
| emokeller| | bismarck, nd | | May 27, 2009 they were there! over 600 (est.) some were on the way out, but with the rain we had fresh gray were plentiful. what a pleasent time we had. except for the ticks.should still be plenty of picking left.this is what i`m used to at my spots around the bismarck area. |
| KIM| | Moorhead, MN | | May 24, 2009 Ran out this morning for 2 hours after hearing about the possible heavy rain that may come. Last year I found a bunch of morels destroyed by the rain. Well worth the trip. Found approx 125 shrooms that weighed in at 7 pounds. They sure get heavy hauling them through the woods. LOVE IT!!!!! |
| | | bismarck, nd | | emokeller(at)bis.midco.net May 24, 2009 my wife went out last night , and despite getting lost for a while and falling down she managed to bring home well over 100. we will both go out today . should get 300 to 400 easily, as i out pick her that much |
| Darren| | Fargo, ND | | May 24, 2009 Another year and the Morels win again,I haven't spent countless hours, but 3 years in a row a few hours a few days and again the elusive one has won!I have taken the advice, read books even bought a video online. Its a bit frustrating. One day I may have to follow you Kim ;) Thanks for trying to help the rookie,I might have to look in your mailbox again, thats the only place I could find them before.lol |

| fungushunter| | Fargo, ND | | May 22, 2009 Picked 27 today, giving me a total of exactly 300 for the year. A new personal record! A lot were getting pretty dry or old. Left them to populate next years crop. I think I've neglected my wife and kid enough for a while. I hate to say it but my morel season is over. Cant wait for the chanterelle, puffball and all the others to come out later this year.
Kim, don't know if morels grow in your oak stand, but I would check it in mid august for chanterelles. I think they like white oaks. I'll check my guide and get back to you.
Sher, sounds like your looking in the right spots, but make sure there are a lot of trees around. Especially a lot of fallen and decaying wood like cottonwood and poplar, [seems to be the ticket around here]. The more time you spend looking, even though it might seem fruitless, eventually you will find them. It took me 4 years to find a morel when I first got into this mushroom hunting thing. |
| Kim| | Moorhead, MN | | May 21, 2009 Ran out for 3 hours with a buddy to an area I did on Monday. Brought back 8 1/2 pounds. Lots of cottonwoods. LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!! |
| Sher| | Kindred, ND | | May 21, 2009
Been out the last 2 days SW Kindred and have found nothing. In the foothills of the sandhills. Any pointers? |
| fungushunter| | Fargo, ND | | May 21, 2009 The giants are out! All they needed was a little heat. Picked a heaping basket of 108 last night in just over 2 hours. Many at 4 to 6 inches. Hoping for another good outing tomorrow. Haven't ever had luck under oaks, but it's worth a shot. I'm picking in mostly cottonwoods and poplar too. Lots of fallen and old decaying trees on the ground. The morels love the soft wood. |
| Josh| | Bemidji, MN | | May 20, 2009 Thanks Kim, I've wanted to expand my areas beyond dead elm trees. (thats basicly where I've found 99% of yellows) and I've never really found yellows consistantly anywhere north of st. cloud. good luck to you as well |
| Kim| | Moorhead, MN | | May 20, 2009 Josh, The areas I hunt are primarily cotton woods and poplar. This year I am seeing some coming around the base of the cotton woods in a pasture. I think from the heavy fall moisture and spring moisture and snow melt, the conditions are right. A good spot we have is where some cotton woods were cut down probably 2 years ago and just laying there. All kinds of them growing by & under the brush. I have a new spot which is all oaks. I don't know if it will be good. The soil temp was too cold when I checked there. Maybe I will check next week as we are sitting at about 78 degrees right now. Will report after my afternoon hunt Thursday. Good luck! |
| Josh| | Bemidji, MN | | May 20, 2009 Kim, do you ever find em by Cottenwoods? if you dont mind sharing |
| Kim| | Moorhead, MN | | May 20, 2009 Monday I took a couple of gals out from work for their first experience. What an experience for them as we brought home 9 pounds. Checked another spot yesterday to go on Thursday. Saw plenty growing. Was tough to leave them for Thursday. There were 17 of them that were just to temtping to leave. They weighed in at 1 pound. Thursday should be good. |
| fungushunter| | Fargo, ND | | May 18, 2009 Picked 44 more this morning. I keep picking the big ones and the small ones keep growing. With this weather the season just seems to lasts for ever. I'm used to a week of harvest at most when I've picked during warmer years up here. Did not find anything by Alexandria, but I only made it out for a couple of hours. Sounds like you had a good weekend Kim. 150, nice haul. Hoping to take my wife out on Wednesday, she loves the morels, but hates the ticks. Happy hunting! |
| Josh| | Bemidji, MN | | May 18, 2009 Sounds Pretty Yummy. last night I breaded and fryed about 40 nice ones that I needed to use up cause I got em over a week ago down in red wing area. that was all I ate :) We are Just styarting into the Black season Here. we dont get many yellows usually (thats why I drive south a few hours a couple times most years) |
| Kim| | Moorhead, MN | | May 17, 2009 Hey Josh, - They are all good! Usually have a mixture so I don't have a reference to any particular one. Tonight was stuffed pork chops with morel and wild leek stuffing with a morel/wild leek demi glace'. Even have leftovers for Monday. You are right that there were even small greys and yellows that were getting dry. Hope we are on the early end of the season. I could go for a couple more weeks of this. My wife may disagree though as I am on vacation for the summer and am out in the woods whenever I can be. |
| Josh| | Bemidji, MN | | May 17, 2009 But Kim, don't you find they are better eating when they're grays/whites? even though they aren't as big. also I've found many that never reached maturity before drying up if its true that they are all the same |
| Kim| | Moorhead, MN | | May 17, 2009 Ran out late afternoon. Only had 1 1/2 hours to hunt. 150 shrooms totaling 5 1/2 pounds. Will go back in the morning to cover the rest of the area. Fungus Jon - MMMMMM? - all of the young grey esculenta we left 7 days ago were nice mature yellow esculenta? Go figure? :) Some of the larger ones were getting dry already. |
| Fungi Jon| | waterford , MI | | May 17, 2009 Sorry, too technical. :-) |
