My brother-in=law from Tennessee recalls his mother and father going into the woods at a certain time of year and hunting and finding morels. He is trying to recall the name of that mushroom as known in his part of the state, which was northeast Tennesse. Can someone help recall what morels were known as in that part of the country? Thank you!

I found 5 morels three days ago in Cary. I hope this storm will help the morel season. I also used to live in Michigan and morel season is a huge event in my home town.

I am new to the area, came from Missouri, are there any spots to hunt morels around here?

My son found 3 morel mushrooms in the woods behind our house in Effingham, SC. I am from WV and am familiar with these mushrooms and did not think they would be found in SC, especially as close to the coast as we are. It has been the coldest winter here with below freezing temps for alomost 20 days in a row. I'm thinking this might have something to do with finding them. Any thoughts from anyone?

I found 72 yesterday morning near Spartanburg. I also went to Sumter NF and walked for few hrs in perfect looking bottom land areas....not even one

Came down to the Sumter NF today to check out some hardwood bottom lands. Last year we found some dried up ones on April 9 - obviously too late. Today everything looked perfect, but no morels. Is it still too early?

He lives near Florance SC

Does any one know if they do grow in Florance SC and if they do is it too late for him to hunt?

The season's just now starting here in Indiana

For those of you learning to identify trees such as elm, ash and poplar, here is a useful resource:

http://www.cnr.vt.edu/dendro/dendrology/factsheets.cfm

It's still a little cool, but I'm out to scout today as this will be the 3rd straight year I've found morels in Upstate SC.

The more time you spend in the woods, the more likely it is the morels will find you...

I have quite a few spots in mind. I was on the right track last year, but just didnt have any luck. Thanks for the information. I think I'm going to try to go this weekend, but I think it is still a tad bit early.

Brandon,

Last year was the first time I found any in Gwd. I think I was to late other years. I found mine by a little stream of water and I think it was an Ash tree that it was close to. I am not very good at identifying trees unfortunately. (I don't know but there were plenty of trees, some kind of trees.) I only found two nice ones but it gave me hope that they do grow in this area after not finding any for 5 years. Some lady found some in her back yard under tulip trees in Gwd last spring. Keep looking! But I went to WV and hunted with my family on their property the first of May last year and we found 150 in one day. My sister says Ash and Elm trees. She and my brother in law are great finders. Going again in May this year. Yummy!

Darlene,
I have some property near Greenwood (Waterloo) and I have yet to find any sweet spots. I hunted the river bottoms last year and couldnt find anything (I think I was too late), but I know they are there somewhere! Since we hunt the same geogrphical area I was wondering what surroundings you look for when hunting.

I've been out the last 3 days to several different proven spots and have not seen anything. Hope the cold winter is making them late. Fiddle head frens seem to be behind last year.

Has anyone in the Upstate found morels yet this year? I hope Iam not to late. I went to a spot where I found some this time last year and didn't see any today. I think its a little early because of the cold weather we have had. What do you think?

I love to hunt for morels. I moved from Michigan 4 years ago. Of course, found them like crazy up there. Where in SC can you find these?

Greetings,

Isolated in the SE rainforest of Alaska has prevented me from Morel hunting for decades! Traveling North come spring and planning on following the fruitings North. Thank you for posting your knowledge of habitat, tremendous help.
