| Dry Bones| | Chadron, NE | | December 01, 2009 In reply to the question below concerning if poisonous mushrooms of the amanita family are found in the Black Hills - yes. Amanita Bisporigera and Amanita Vaginata as well as Amanita Muscaria variety Formosa are all found in the hills. Avoid them as they are poisonous, period. |
| Drew| | Ben Lomond, CA | | engel,drew(at)gmail.com November 23, 2009 Are there any mushroom clubs in the Rapid City area?? My sister in law is interested in learning how to forage. The closet I can find on the NAMA website is in St Paul.
Mushroom season is just kicking off here in coastal California. The wife and I got 8 pounds of queen boletes and 3 pounds of coccora this weekend. |
| mushrooms| | rapid city, sd | | lwutzman(at)msn.com November 04, 2009 New here and not sure if I can ask a question cause it calls for a report, but what the heck.. Are there any species of amanita mushrooms that are native to the hills, namely amanita muscaria? Thank you for your help! |
| Butchbob| | Spearfish, SD | | September 30, 2009 Late summer flush of Cottonwood hosted Oyster Mushrooms harvested today on the north edge of town; probably 3 pounds total. We did not find any other other mushrooms, but did get a good bunch of watercress and a bucketfull of apples. Light snow falling as I write, so I think the mushroom season has finally passed for 2009. |
| Frankly| | Lead, SD | | September 14, 2009 Pine Honey 'shrooms are now popping and we found a few scarce King Boletes this weekend near O'Neill Pass at +6,000 elevation. Quite a few Slippery Jacks still on the edge of meadows and lots of small Puffballs. Heat wave this coming week after the recent rains could make for a good Fall harvest. |
| Frankly| | Lead, SD | | August 13, 2009 Slippery Jack Bolete's are still popping from 6,000' elevation and lower south of Lead. Have yet to find any King Bolete's. |
| gummer| | brandon, sd | | August 06, 2009 found enough chantrelles to cover my kitchen tabel on aug 3rd south of sioux falls
|
| Butchbob| | Spearfish, SD | | July 21, 2009 Frankly: We have not found any Chanterells in the Hills, perhaps we have the wrong kind of oaks being bur oaks versus the white oaks. We have also looked under Green Ash w/o success; although I understand that they like Ash back east.
Did find black morels in Glacier National Park this past weekend right on the snow line....our latest find ever. Really adds to our brook trout dinner in the fry pan.
Please keep us posted on the boletes and if/when the honey mushrooms start to pop here in the Hills. |
| Frankly| | Lead, SD | | July 15, 2009 Completed a quick search for King Bolete and Aspen Bolete, but found nothing here south of Lead. High heat expected for the next 3-4 weeks, so we will resume our search after the mid-August rains.
Anyone find Chanterells in the Black Hills? I've never found any here and am currious as to if anyone else may have had success. Appreciate any info on this new to me mushroom. |
| WanderWest| | Hot Springs, SD | | June 22, 2009 We are really starting to dry out in the southern hills and are seeing the last of the aspen oyster myshrooms. Still a few puffballs, but they too are going quick. |
| Frankly| | Lead, SD | | June 12, 2009 Last morel trip of the season today for us west of O'Neill Pass on the Wyoming border. About a dozen pounds of Aspen oyster 'shrooms and 28 black morels. All in all, a good season...see y'all next year! |
| Butchbob| | Spearfish, SD | | June 09, 2009 Thanks sunny. We did find about 3 dozen blacks per day the past three days in the Moon area and stayed near the 6,500' elevation. The ground is soaked and it rained and snowed this weekend. Except for the west facing areas most of our finds looked to be up a week or less. Also found a big bonus in four elk sheds!! |
| sunny| | Custer, SD | | June 06, 2009 Hey Butchbob we have been doing well the past few days just south of Deerfield so I think Moon should also still be producing. Lots of rain the past 6 days. |
| Butchbob| | Spearfish, SD | | June 05, 2009 Winding down in the Black Hills high country as we found only 5 blacks and two red false morels in 4 hours of walking today. Aspen stands with north facing aspect at 6,000' elevation had 1-4 inch blacks, but isolated on NE facing aspect adjacent to junipers and w/in 3 inch kin-nick-n-nick (SP?) patches. Both 8+ inch aspen and <3 inch aspen had morels so no real pattern. All were up for a week or so as the stems have started to discolor. No luck in any of the logging units.
Will look at the Moon country this weekend and see if anything still is worthwhile at that elevation. Will take the flyrod and a few green nymphs as the GFP continues to place nice fish in the beaver ponds. |
| justin| | huron, sd | | May 31, 2009 goddamn! i dont want to have to actually buy morels, kind of changes the flavor. its like eating frozen walleye from the grocery store. its just not the same if I wasnt the one who harvested the sensitive buggers. any ever come up in chamberlain?
|
| sunny| | Custer, SD | | May 26, 2009 Both blacks and yellows were popping this weekend in the Blue Belle and Legion Lake areas of Custer State Park. Best luck was in aspens with unobstructed east or west sun. Also in small meadows bordered by aspens and low juniper. Asparagus is just starting to show. |
| shroominnnnnn| | West of the River, SD | | May 25, 2009 I live west river and have not found any here. I don't know why I would found some in Pierre if it is due to the weather. They are a strange thing to find and are always a mystery!! |
| justin| | huron, sd | | gabejw(at)hotmail.com May 25, 2009 maybe theyre late because of the weather? a |
| Butchbob| | Spearfish, SD | | May 24, 2009 We were on the east edge of the Bear Lodge this weekend, probably 5,000 foot elevation and found blacks in aspens with a south aspect. No greys or yellows. |

| Kerri| | Yankton, SD | | kerrif30(at)hotmail.com May 22, 2009 Ok, I think I'm just going to give up for the year. I went out again yesterday, was out for over 2 hours and found nothing. Walked probably 2-3 miles, up and down hills, around ravines, ect...Looked in dried creek beds, under dead trees, checked the bank of the river....found absolutely nothing!!
When I was done I was so aggrivated that I sat down and cried! Most years I'm able to find pounds and pounds of them and then I sell them to some older people that are not able to go out anymore. All I wanted was to find enough to sell to them again this year, and I was going to use the money to go see my little brother who is 26 years old and is dying, has less than a year left. He lives in the Black Hills and I was hoping to find & sell enough shrooms to have the money to go see him.
But obviously I'm not going to be able to do that this year and it's totally depressing. I have no idea why other people are finding them and I haven't found a single one for over a week. I don't know what I'm doing wrong!

| Julie| | Rozet, Wy | | westernstr(at)aol.com May 21, 2009 Nothing yet around South of Custer State Park. This weekend should be great, although I'm going to Montana to hunt. |
| Frankly| | Lead, SD | | May 21, 2009 My wife found one giant black morel at Deer Mountain today. It was in aspens and full sun at at 6,000 foot elevation. Can't wait for the long weekend! |
| Nunavut| | Yankton, SD | | May 21, 2009 Kerri...don't give up yet. Last night we found a dozen between Beaver Lake and the Jim. Took us 2 hours as they were hiding in the shade and in thicker cover. |
| Kerri| | Yankton, SD | | kerrif30(at)hotmail.com May 21, 2009 Went out for an hour and a half last night and found ONE!! And that ONE was growing out of a pile of poo, so needless to say I didn't pick it!
I'm starting to think that this year is gonna be a bust. Had that good flush at the beginning of May and since then it's been shitty. Yesterday is the third time in a row I didn't find any, which is VERY unusual for me. I even went out to the private land I have permission to hunt on and still found nothing! I feel like I'm an amateur again! This is the worst year I've had in 5 or 6 years. I don't know if it's just me or it has something to with this messed up weather...in less than 48 hours it went from 38 degrees to 97 degrees! I hoping it's more the weather than me but I don't know.
Anyone still finding good numbers down south here? I think I'm going to go ONE more time and if I don't find any again, I'm done for the year.

| Little Debbie| | Tea, SD | | May 21, 2009 We did find quite quite a few this weekend and last night on the Big Sioux. Many were in the 4+ inch size and quite fresh. The rain certainly helps. |
| Tyler Honke| | Sioux Falls, Sd | | May 21, 2009 Does anyone in the area think the sun and rain this Thursday will produce and morels or is the season over here? |
| Butchbob| | Spearfish, SD | | May 20, 2009 Hunted just oaks yesterday around 3,500 foot elevation and found 4 dozen black morels. Many were less than inch and evidently were up for quite some time as they were dry tops. The biggest were only 2.75 inches.
We don't normally hunt the bur oaks as they seldom produce any quantity unless intermixed with aspens, but our normal mountain spots have yet to really turn on. Anyone else on the board have any luck in the bur oak patches? |
