We are completing our second week in central Washington state and continue finding black morels in burn units, logging units and a few natural blacks at elevation 5,000 to 6,000 feet. A great year in SD and now wrapping up in wet Wa.

Black morels in the Bear Lodge Mountains north of town did ok this year. I found a few yesterday by Cook Lake.

Well over 50% of the black morels found today are too far gone. We didn't get the large scale rain that was predicted the past few days and so I think the season is about done.

Camped at Deerfield had fantastic success all week near the lake, S beyond Moon, W to Moskee and N to Rochford. 3-5 inches of rain a week ago and heat now has black morels going crazy. Most very fresh and plenty of small morels, average of just over 2 inches tall. Aspen pods with juniper, edge of logging areas and spruce pods with aspen all producing serious poundage now. Heavy rain next 72 hours could keep 'em popping another week. Many forest service roads washed out.

I am finding false morels around spruce so be careful in your harvest. Aspen tree oyster mushrooms now popping. Still finding black morels at +6,000 feet. Odd year as still zero yellow morels.

124 very very fresh black morels yesterday in Custer State Park all found using the how to stuff shared on this board so a big thank you to all. We drove by this place before, but now will stop by often...logging area with patchy aspen, bottom of steep north slope, torn up sandy land, 3 inches of rain the past 4 days. One big bull snake, but thank God no rattlesnakes.

We found 30 blacks west of Deerfield yesterday. About half were very fresh and the area got almost 2 inches of rain on Thursday so more to come?

Butchbob, Would you consider taking a novice morel hunter with you sometime? I've had some luck near Victoria Lake the past 3 weeks but would love to learn more about morels and other Black Hills species. Thanks, Tom

We too are hunting near the 6,000 foot elevation and we're still finding good poundage in aspen pods and along the margins of 1-2 year old logging units. Best success now on north and northeast facing slopes with good drainage and sandy soils. A great many dry tops and blowouts, need rain.

Just today, myself, kids and my cousin's wife went morel hunting in the Black hills. We primarily stayed near the Beaver creek area. Since we were unsuccessful we ventured a bit more to the north finding areas with pines and white birch. Still we didn't turn up anything. I'm new to morel hunting up in these parts. I was hoping someone may share with me some areas they may think to turn up some morsels. Please feel free to contact me. I'd really like to share a good experience with my kids finding morels.

A good flush here at the house at the 6,000 foot elevation south of Lead. It has been a very good week with over 850 blacks on the dehydrator and in the freezer. Not a single yellow yet in the high country and no Aspen oyster 'shrooms yet. We do need another shower or two to keep the season going into June.

Fantastic success this weekend with five of seven areas producing significant poundage. Blacks in logging units and uncut areas of small diameter aspen. Giant blacks in the slash, many had already blown or gone to mush so they have been up for awhile. Tiny to 2 inch fresh blacks in the aspens.

For others struggling to find 'em keep looking. We target elevations where aspen are just starting to leaf and ferns just starting to unfurl. Sandy soil and plenty of sun also are key.

We spent the past six days along the lower Missouri River and did not do well at all. Spoke w/the state game warden at Pickstown who said it was a very poor year, visited w/several local 'shroomers who were finding 1 or 2 per outing and others who were skunked. Back in the hills now waiting for the snow to melt and hoping that the blacks flush soon. Good luck to all w/the remaining season!

Myself and son went down Missouri River area. Walked the woded breaks a good 5 hours. Ended up with about 2/3 grocery bag between us. Pretty hard picking in my opinion. At least I had enough to give away a few to my wife's mom.

Some were a little moist so I like to split right away and dry out some.

Hey all,

Kansas Shroommate and I found about 6 lbs of nice big fresh ones in the morning yesterday but got skunked in the afternoon. Even found a dozen pretty grays at the top of a north facing slope. We were just south of Sioux Falls.

Kind of a long drive for 6 lbs but it was most likely our last run of the year. Still had a blast in the woods!

Good luck ShroomMates!

we have plenty of season left in SD. east side and west side. you just have to get out there and look for them, with some places needing harder looking than others.:) and by the way those lilacs can really cheat you out of some good morels if you go by the blooming lilacs alone. i've seen morels way before and way after the lilacs have done their thing.

Visited six hot spots and found nine fresh blacks and a few cottonwood oysters yesterday. 1.5 inches rain on Monday, but it is now snowing hard in town w/6-8 inches expected. Next week should really start our season in the hills.

Is anyone finding any morels in South Dakota? If so, how long of a season do you think is left? Are the lilacs blooming?

A friend said he had some on his property...we got 3 plastic grocery bags full and he had a bag himself. We hit the mother lode and they are delicious. What a delight...I am hooked and want to know more.

We spent the past week in the Pickstown to Sioux City stretch and have found mostly small singles and no quantity to speak of. Thankfully, the walleye and crappie bite has been great. The coming heat should really get the river morels to start showing.

The recent moisture has the yellows and some asparagus starting along the Cheyenne River. Too much snow north of town for the blacks yet.

Been hunting in Eastern Iowa for a few weeks now and it's been an awful season in Iowa (at least the area I'm from). Typically find MUCH more than I've been finding, but the season seems to have ended here. Went out a couple days ago and came home empty handed. Same story as I've seen on several states' boards: finding them few and far between and all in odd spots, no masses or large groups but single yellows. Many more greys this year than usual.

I wish everyone luck. I'm heading WAY north this coming week to see if there's any hope left for a motherlode, but for now I'm saying things are coming to a close in my area.

GOOD LUCK!

Looks like good timing for that hike Butchbob. Will finally have warmed up for 4+days according to 10day forecast. Im concerned with the warm weather of 2+ weeks past, and this recent cold snap we are in the middle of, may have confused the mycelium and tricked many of the fruiting bodies to remain dormant for another year.
Past two years had a weak harvest, with a similar creeping spring. But if its going to happen down there, 14th - 20th should be it. in my opinion.

A state sponsored Morel Hike is set for May 15 at the Oahe downstream recreation area located 5 miles north of Pierre. The news release says to meet at the park at 10 AM Central time and bring boots for the hike. The Game, Fish and Parks crew will mentor the hike. Park entrance license is needed, but no other fee charged. More info at 605-223-7722 or at the state GFP parks website. For those looking for spot on morel info this should be very worthwhile.
