| sandman| | madison hts, mi | | July 29, 2010 Hey guys, get this: Meijer right now is selling dried morels, chanterels, and a wild mix that looked like it included some bi-colors. They were selling the morels in 1/2oz bags for $8.99. |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 29, 2010 Found a GREAT spot for kings. Been picking them for over a week now. Been picking enough that I have to share with friends, ain't that right FungusPhilly. The bicolors in my backyard are all gone until the next rain. I've been eating kings every night, with a few bicolors in the mix. I've had plenty of those, so I really haven't been doing a whole lot of looking. I still think that Morels are my favorite! Although the kings are really pretty good, especially if you fry them until they are crunchy. |
| Mushroomsmitty| | Grand Rapids, Mi | | July 23, 2010 Hey Everyone: Sorry been off the board. My oldest just flew back to Florida and all my free time I was hanging with him. Did take a few lunchtime treks by the office and have pulled about 9 lbs of Chanterelles and some of the biggest Voluminus latex Milkys Iv'e ever found over at the office spot. Couple trips to the park and bi- colors and Green Quilt and Tacky Green Russulas. Dave- My trumpets are done over here too- maybe all this rain will re-pop them. Surprised no Chicken of The Woods yet. Will try to npost more often now but also trying to get my 17 year old through both Geometry 1 and 2 in Summer school. Thats about 3 hours a night on that stuff-- YUCK!!!! |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 23, 2010 I got a buttload of boletus bicolor growing in my backyard. With this heat and all this moisture, things are really starting to happen around here! |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 22, 2010 Well I'll tell ya what... if I hear that strange new noise out in da woods, I'll be on em like an old chicken on a brand new worm!! LOL! |
| sandman| | madison hts, mi | | July 22, 2010 Thanks for the invite Dave, but I will be up north with my nieces. I've never looked for anything but morels up there so maybe this will pay off with some surprises. I've heard some strange noises in the woods lately. Could they be the sounds of little trumpets calling you. They seem to be saying "Daaaaave.....coooome get meeeeeee..."
see you in the woods |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 21, 2010 In fact I got some butter heatin up right now. That hot butter has a blind date with a couple of Edulis boletus that I know!LOL. |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 21, 2010 Latt, Life is short and gettin shorter! Ya gotta enjoy EVERY minute. The thrill of the chase, the catch, and definetly the BOUNTY! With the economy the way that it is, and work as scarce as it is,(I'm an asphalter) you have to love it when you get your groceries where there are no cash registers! Ma Nature NEVER charges me for shopping at her place. |
| Latt| | Columbus , Ohio | | July 21, 2010 Biker Dave, Enjoy reading your post. Sounds like you enjoy he bounty as much as the hunt and I am sitting here eating my fresh Chanties sauteed in beef drippings and a side of ribs left over from yesterday. I will have to trek a few extra miles next time out to work this dinner off.

| Biker Dave| | Ortonville, Mi. | | hipd926(at)yahoo.com July 21, 2010 There is a BIG party in Ortonville @ my sisters house this weekend. There will be live music and camping, so nobody has to drive drunk. So anyone interested can e-mail me for details. Last year was a blast! This year is going to be even bigger and better. So if you have a tent or a camper c'mon. There's plenty of room! LOTS of state land within walkin distance to do some shroomin, if you want. The party is on Sat. 7/24, but you can set up camp on Fri. 7/23. You could go shroomin all day Sat. or if you have a motorcycle, there will be a 100 mi. scenic ride starting @ 10;00am. NO CHILDREN!! Must be 18 to attend party. |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 21, 2010 Stopped by my New Hot spot for the kings, low and behold, 5 more beauties. I think that this weeekend, I am going to really cover some ground there. Also I have to go back to the spot that I found a bunch of baby cinnibars. Hopefully the will be big enough to pick. I HAVE to find some trumpets. These doggone trumpets are giving me fits, just like the Morels did this year. Thanks FungusPhilly and Mushroomsmitty for getting me hooked on those blasted black trumpets. LOL. I almost feel like a drug addict needin to find some drugs. LOL! What happened to Carl? Is he back from Maine yet? I wanted to find out if he ate that 4lb lobster for me. I sure don't feel full! LOL. |
| sandman| | madison hts, mi | | July 20, 2010 Sorry Dave, been starting to mentally shift gears toward hunting season. It's hard to do when it's 90 degrees and humid but the chores need to be done. I suffered thru the game also until until deadliest catch came on. going up north this weekend to check on deer plots and blinds. Hope to do some shroomin while up there.
Detroit - the worlds most mediocre sports town. |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 20, 2010 Tigers lost. 8-0. That's 5 losses in a row! No one is talking shroms, might as well talk about our "caught in a slump" baseball team. LOL! |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 20, 2010 The Tigers are losing 3-0 in the bottom of the 5th, to the Rangers, if anyone cares. LOL. Hey FungusPhilly, what happened to you? I have a GREAT place for us to hunt the next time that we go out huntin shrooms, and it is private property also! |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 20, 2010 O.K. I ate the king as an appetizer, a salad of fresh romaine lettuce, spinach, radishes, and tomatoes out of the garden. Crushed up some dried Morels, mixed them in some hamburger, and made a morel, cheddar, provolone burger, and now I am STUFFED!!! Life don't get much better than this. Total cost of this meal, about 2 bucks. The experience of eating it... PRICELESS!! |
| Biker Dave| | Ortonville, Mi. | | hipd926(at)yahoo.com July 20, 2010 Went out today. Found 1 really nice King (boletus edulis), found many bicolor (boletus sensibilis) no god for eating, and a bunch of baby cinibar chants (Canthearellus cinnabarinus). Eating the King while I am typing! Mmmmm!!! No black trumpets (craterellus fallax)! Crap!! |
| Biker Dave| | Ortonville, Mi | | hipd926(at)yahoo.com July 20, 2010 O.K. You guys have been pretty quiet here lately! I'm getting bored. I think that I'm hittin da woods for a little while. Hopefully I will have something to talk (or brag) about to get you guys going! LOL. FungusPhilly, I tried calling you to see if you wanted to go, but I got your voicemail. I'm think that I am going to sell the Saab, so if you want to get out shroomin in Style, then we have to get together soon! Call me when you read this or get the voice message that I left you. Haven't said this in a while, GET OUTSIDE, IT IS A WONDERFUL PLACE TO BE!!! |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 20, 2010 O.K. FungusPhilly and Mushroomsmitty, I was on the Ohio board telling our Southern friends about the Wealth of knowledge that we have here in Mi. with you two guys. I was trying to help in some identification from what I have learned from you both, but you guys gave me sooo much information, it is hard to retain it all. I'm sure that you two should be able to identify most of Clevshrooms shrooms. I remember seeing most of these shrooms at Smittys spot when we were all together. You guys knew what almost every shroom was, whether it was edible or not. Sorry to obligate you guys, but both of your guys knowledge about mushrooms is IMPRESSIVE!!!Thanks to you BOTH for the knowledge that you have shared with me! I need to hang out with you both to absorb some more! |
| Clevshroom| | R river, OH | | hkg4142 AT yahoo DOT com July 20, 2010 Biker Dave sent me over to seek the advice of Fungus Philly and Mushroomsmitty. This is our first year hunting and so far so good! Went out yesterday and found my first boletus species, picked a bunch and took pics. Looking to help ID some of these, thanks for the advice!
Here is a pic of two of the Boletus cut length wise, I cut these at the same time as you can see one stained blue quick, the other no staining. The one with no staining also had a yellow pore base that did not stain easily when touched, im leaning toward boletus bicolor on the non staining one, while the other maybe Boletus calopus.
Next pic is some random Boletus I came acroos, have not ID'd them yet-
 More of those-
A pile of Boletus possible bicolors or calopus?
 More-
 and more-
The boletus where purple/ almost brown, white pores-
In this pic just in front of the boletus is a mushroom that has the trumpeted cap, white stalk, yellow cap, grows on logs solo or in groups.
These are a red looking chant? Not sure on these but they where growing in a swampy area, very muddy and wet.
 More-

Thanks for any details you guys can give me on these shrooms! |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 16, 2010 Dreaming about Craterellus fallax! Mmmmmm!!!! |
| Mushroomsmitty| | Grand Rapids, Mi | | July 16, 2010 Hey Guys- We missed the majority of the rain over here. We did get a bit early Wed. Went Wed. nigt by the office and pulled 4 lbs of really large Chants- Cheated a little- knew they were there and was waiting for the rain. Did go to the park area and lots starting again. Found 3 really well formed Frosts. Philly- those are really a neat Bolete when examined up close. Love the reticulation on the stem. Did find the biggest Voluminious Milky Iv'e ever found- and found a lone Parasol- very early for that. Oh- and Sweettooths up- early for those too!! All in all the 4 lbs of chants, 10 or so Milkys, 10 sweettooths, a few Bi colors, The Frosts, A Black Staining Polypore I'm letting grow. Looks like no rain again for a few days- will keep you all posted. |
| Fungus Philly| | The Greater Flint Area, MI | | July 16, 2010 Haven't had much time to venture into the woods lately. Got a new job, keepin me busy. I did discover some domain squatters trying to pose as owners of this site. I've informed Patrick who is the true owner of the site. Hopefully he puts them in their place. With all this rain we've gotten lately, I'm sure there are some goodies in the woods. Biker Dave, how's your schedule this evening? I'm off work today. Give me a shout if you want to go out. You have my number. |
| Biker Dave| | | | July 15, 2010 Awful quiet out there Gentlemen!(And Ladies.) We just got dumped on. Ma Nature decided to water my garden for me tonight! Hallelujah!! Maybe this moisture will encourage some fungus to grow also! Black Trumpets! Can you say "Mmmmmm"!! |
| Fungus Philly| | The Greater Flint Area, MI | | fungusphilly(at)gmail.com July 14, 2010
Hey Patrick,
Why are you selling the domain? How much do you want for it? My email is listed. |
| Mushroomsmitty| | Grand Rapids, Mi | | July 14, 2010 Hey Sandman- sorry= just checking in about every 3 days or so with my oldest son being up from Florida. With work getting busy, family, and a little golf time on the home computer is limited. Yes the spot is showing some action again. We had a little rain and finding various Russula's and Milkys, and a few Boletes. Did find 3 Lobster Mushrooms a few days ago.
Chants are back out and have a real nice flush at spot by my office. Also have a Jack-O-Lantern sighting. JOL"S no good!!!! Very pretty though. Will try and find time to get a picture and post it so you guys can see them. |
| sandman| | | | July 14, 2010 Did I mention the 4 new mushroom books, and 2 new tree books? Just what I needed, another hobby. My friends and family already think I'm nuts. This just confirms it.
Hey magnet, let us know your still out there once in a while. |
| sandman| | madison hts, mi | | July 14, 2010 You guys crack me up. This board got me all wound up in February for morels. (sorry Phil,Morchella esculenta) I still don't know how you remember all that. Now you got me looking for asparagus, things that bleed white, ans fungus that looks like small burned lettuce. Now you guys are are throwing seeds. What's next, wild tobacco so we can roll our own cigars after eating this stuff. I'm already working on making my own Mead to drink with it.
Brad, in my yard, the black rasberries were finished 2 weeks ago, the reds are in full production (14 quarts so far), the service berries just finished, blueberries just hit this week, and the black berries are starting to turn. I planted them all in the yard so I wouldn't have to go looking for them. If I could only do that with morels. |
| sandman| | madison hts, mi | | July 14, 2010 That's Ok Philly, I think we knew who it was.
I sure hope these cloudbursts keep coming. Even the LBM's aren't growing. we need some shroom producing weather, before we end up visiting Dave in the hospital for trumpet withdrawals.
How are you doing Smitty. Is your supermarket producing again yet? I've been wanting to get out , but spare time is a comodity so I've been waiting for the weather to cooperate. Maybe this weekend |
| Fungus Philly| | The Greater Flint Area, MI | | July 13, 2010 forgot to put my name on that last post. Ooops. A little out of it today. |
| | | | | July 13, 2010 Hydrastis canadensis (I believe that's how it's spelled, but don't hold me to it) known as Goldenseal has no restrictions in Ohio. Have at it, Latt. Again, I will refer you to my post on Ginseng for the web address that has that information. |
