Mandy,
Sorry, I was speaking of Morels only. In our state we get started about April 10th or so, and can go through to the middle of May. Study up on what Elm tree bark looks like. Also study what the Elm leaves look like, they will be laying on the ground from the past fall. Most people look for Elms which are still standing, but yet dead. Also be carefull of the false Morel, if eaten it can be deadly. Or at the minimum, it will make you very sick. Do not eat anything that you cannot positively identify as safe. I cannot express this enough. Your best bet is to find someone who has years of experience in mycology to go with.

Mandy,
Dead elms seem to be the best place to look, although they can be anywhere. They have been found in some strange places. Also the trend is to have heavy rain followed with a warm up in the weather. A good way to actually guage when to start looking is, when the redbuds start to bloom. This seems to work well in my area but should hold somewhat true in your state. It really depends on what part of the state you are in. Look for 45 to 55 degree at night and 60 to 70 degree day time temps. I am no expert, just an amature just like you. These are just some observations of mine. Good luck 1

It's going to be my first spring/summer hunting mushrooms, including morels. I'm excited and cannot wait to start venturing through the woods.
I have a few books but I find experience is the best teacher, are there certain types of areas that morels favor, such as rotting downed trees and under certain types of trees? I appreciate any information provided.

i have been hunting morels for 36 years in this area and have talked to several people around this area and found one thing out very quickly.
even small differences in elevation drastically affects weather.
this affects when the morels fruit.
so it may be unusual for them to fruit in june in one area but may be perfectly normal in others.
just make sure that they are hollow inside head&stem and as well as having the external morel appearance.
pinch the stems off near the ground which leaves the mycilium in the ground for future fruits.
out of a patch i leave one intact for every 9 that i harvest to allow for good spore coverage for the area.

Been searching for morels (first year) walking thru woods and creeks etc.. then my daughter comes in and says "is this what your looking for?" and there are some growing right next to my driveway in the lawn! (on June 5th) anyway, what I need to know.. maybe leave them there so they will mulitply next year? can I dig them and move them to a safer area? Id like to know there will be more next year. (or should i just eat them right now!) thanks Kathy

Anyone finding A LOT of snakes this year? We've had a baby rattlesnake on our sidewalk this year. Haven't found many more morels in a while.. but the snakes are keeping us from looking too hard.

My area is a great place to hunt Morels and some other (bluer) species of mushrooms that make you feel quite funny after ingestion!! The Ohio river valley is a haven for these "magical" mushrooms as well as Morels!

Wow ,has the rain brought them up,been out twice in the past three days, have found roughly 1500,most between 2 inches and 5 ,but did manage to find some monsters, bigger than 8 inches .my best spot has not produced so good this year, but got permission to hunt a new area on sunday,so i put on my rain proof hunting outfit and went at it for 7 hours.the area was logged last year .so alot of roads through the property and alot of tops everywhere .didnt think i would do so good ,boy was i wrong, seemed like they was everywhere on the roads, exept the main the trucks used to get in and out of the property .have never seen it like that before and i have been hunting for 15 years.Iguess with such a big change in the area and all the trees being cut down all the spores came at once. hopefully it will be like that for more than one year.went to the same place today and found about the same amount .
Has anyone else ever seen this happen after a area was logged????

Hi folks. Just completed leg two of my morel season. The area's I hunt are Central IN, Central, OH, and Northern WV. Season has been a little below average IMO. Mostly due to the consensus of a weak elm production. Still, we got around 1,200 so far. Highlights on leg two were a NE slope loaded with 250+ blacks in my parents backyard that my mom discovered and 2nd year dead elm that produced over 50 perfect yellows on a N slope. Lots o' pics and vids @

Good luck to all.

went yesterday and was about a day too late. Found about 30 real nice yellow, couple of whites, and some big falses were out. Turkeys and deer had worked on them pretty good in last couple of days. Have about a week or two left.
