time to start looking for brown bradleys, lactarius volemus, I think there the best mushrooom to eat in this area. but they can be mistaken
for with other mushrooms, But a dedicated mushroom hunter can study them and soon be ready to hunt them

As far as "picking" mushrooms in WV State Parks, you CAN CUT them but not pull them. You CAN harvest fruits, nuts and mushrooms as long as you DO NOT up root them. Many parks have "Wild food weekends" where you can gather the unusual.
And yes my Oysers are as big as saucers already.

Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus), and mushrooms with gills underneath. Some of these are easier to identify than others, so take great care with them! Oysters are pretty easy to ID, once you've become familiar with them.

MollyMoochers and all... while doing extensive 'research' of the WV & PA laws last year, verified that picking ANYTHING in a WV state park is illegal. Has been for many many years, I think. A nice lady at the Charleston DNR office said its the only way to keep some semblance of flora in some of the parks, as sanging and ramping decimated a lot of forest. Lots of state forest, though, and that is available for collecting for personal and family use, but not for selling what you find. THAT is what private land and the ignorance of landholders who know nothing about mushrooms is for ;) I snagged a huge box of Sulphur Shelf that way last year.

Good luck to all. Time to forget morels and start looking for oysters and gilled mushrooms!

Gixxerman; we searched Glade last weekend and only found 4 yellows and a couple lovebirds on the rocks below the falls. Was quite a sight!

Not sure if it is legal to actually pick moochers in state parks. Better ask for permission or be prepaired to beg for forgiveness. lol

Wife and I went out today and found 7 shrooms. White ones. Would like to purchase some if you are willing!! We love'em but have not found a spot to find them. Where we are going, is hit hard. We are trying to find a private land deal but, no one wants strangers on their land. So, come on and spread the wealth. Will purchase some.

anybody know if morels grow during the day? And if you find small ones and leave them do they grow larger. Every one I've seen never grows after they first pop

Hi folks. Yesterday as I drove back in the rain to Indy, I wrapped my 2010 morel season. This year was wierd but I adapted and ended up with 1,937 morels. Almost all were yellows with around 200 blacks thrown in the mix. Virtually no tulips or half-frees to speak of. Highlights included a black smack dab against a yellow south of indy in early April, a single elm that produced 255 yellows in central OH, finding lots with my family in WV, a 10 cluster of yellows, and spending time with some of my best friends. Keying on first year dead elms was the secret to my success. Countless flushes of 30+ were frequent. Four trees produced anywhere from 80 to 120 yellows. Ash, apple, tulip tree, and cherry production seemed down. No complaints though.
Soon, wine cap stropharia will be up as well as oysters. Then it's time for summer shrooms. Good luck to all.

In the coming days I should be able to add text info to them all.
Good luck to all.

I have tracked the growth of mushrooms before and it really depends upon the species of morel and the growing conditions. I have watched browns not really grow for 14 days (from little bitty to dired out little bitty) when conditions were too dry and cold. I have witnessed remarkable growth overnight when conditions were perfect. as an aside to Cory: are you by any chance Cory Boothe?

yeh it was the same mushroom, i went out real early in the morning and left it, it must have just started to pop and it got bigger probalby as soon as i left.

This question is for Corey from Motown, are you sure it was the same mushroom? I have left them to grow and when I came back to check there was only small dried up shrooms I should have picked the first time through. Anybody else have any comments or theories?

Went out tonight for an hour and a half and came back with 68 real nice yellows. All fresh and anywhere from 3 inches to six inches tall.

This is the first good find for me this year. most were in one spot no more than 30 foot in circumference. They were on a north facing ridge line with mostly popular and ash trees around. Am going back out tomorrow and will report back if I get lucky.

Enjoy the spring it has been fantastic so far.
