Ironwood Michigan

83 years ago, the "Storm of the Century" hit the Upper Peninsula, including Ironwood - dumping 30-40 inches of snow in 30 hours, accompanied by 50+ mile an hour winds. It's said that the snow drifts covered the telephone poles.

Without the kind of plow technology we have today, clearing the roads took days or weeks. And so, people had to get inventive.

The men pictured below are relatives of the Jacquart Family (today's owners of Stormy Kromer). These hardy men are using a toboggan in the aftermath of the '38 blizzard to transport milk from the local creamery to the family's grocery store in Ironwood. It just so happens that they are also wearing Kromer caps - not knowing that someday their descendants would carry on producing the warm winter caps.

George "Stormy" Kromer and one of the many minor league baseball teams he played for and/or managed. You can see him in the upper right of this photo from 1915. His baseball playing days influenced his iconic cap design, as you can see from the six-panel crown we still use today.
