The Water

We are blessed here. Water recreation includes over 150 waterfalls, some are easy to get to with walkways and steps and others take a little adventure and a little bushwacking. Black River Scenic Byway has five waterfalls within a 10 mile area. Potawatomi Falls is barrier free, ending in the only Harbor & Marina operated by the USDA Forest Service in the lower 48 states.

Lakes and Rivers. It is said that you can not go more than 6 miles in any direction without finding a lake or river. That's amazing! We have a smorgasbord of lakes. We have little lakes, we have medium lakes, we have lakes linked together, we have the UP's largest inland lake, the world's largest lake and a lake in the clouds. In fact, we have so many lakes we even have a lost lake.

Small lakes dot the southern half of the 1 million acre Ottawa National Forest. A chain of 15 lakes makes up the Cisco Chain of Lakes in Watersmeet. This chain is one of the largest in the World. The chain of lakes has 271 miles of beautiful shoreline.

Lake Gogebic is the largest inland lake in the U.P. reaching 18 miles long and 3 miles wide, full of fish and a great swimming area. Gogebic, pronounced go-gee-bic, is an Ojibwa word meaning "where trout rising leave small rings upon the surface".

Lake of the Clouds located in the Porcupine Mountain Wilderness State Park is one of the most photographed lakes around. Our "Lost Lake" is one of the small lakes we spoke of earlier, located in Ironwood Township. It has a pavilion and a dock.

The larger lakes have resorts, restaurants, boat launches even boat rentals. Each lake has a variety of accommodations for those spending a week or weekend. Spend time on our lakes and you will feel like a better person the next day.

No one thinks of Coastline in the Midwest, yet counting all the miles of coastline would take days. Bring your boat, a picnic basket, pick a lake and take a ride.
